How to pack the right hospital bag for you

Hi Everyone,

It’s almost time and being the major OCD planner that I am. I spent a good few hours putting my hospital bag together. I really struggled putting my hospital bag together, I was so overwhelmed with all the information out there I ended up getting my friend to help me pack! I wanted to make sure my bag is personalized and it’s for me, not just some list that’s on the internet. I think I read enough top ten things you should pack or the top five essential must haves. In this post, I want to share with you how to pack the right hospital bag for you.

Packing the mommy bag:

I feel like I’m going ton vacation, but sadly it’s going to be a very painful vacation. Here’s what I packed

  • Reading Socks (in case I get cold)
  • Normal socks
  • 1 open robe
  • 1 set of PJs (I actually just packed a quarter sleeve black dress, I didn’t want to wear pants because I normally sleep in a silk dress so I wanted to make sure that I am going to be comfortable)
  • Slippers for roaming in the hospital (just in case I’m there for a long time)
  • 1 nursing bra
  • 3 pairs of underwears
  • Adult diapers (I originally got pads, but my friend said – just get diapers, here are the ones I got. I’m going to bleed like a mofo)
  • Pads (I did pack my pads just in case. I got the overnight ones, these are the ones I got)
  • 1 set of hospital wear (comfy pants and a tank top)
  • 1 long dress for leaving the hospital (I really didn’t want to wear pants after)
  • Breast pump
  • Baby bottles
  • 10 nursing pads
  • Baby Wipes
  • Camera/phone/batteries

My daily essential items:

I packed how I would when I go on vacation, accept I did add a few more stuff because of the baby. Everyone is different, you might not need all these stuff, but I like to be prepared. I certainly need all these when I’m on vacation! So, I would suggest pack like you are going to be on a 4 day vacation.

  • Shampoo & Conditioner (I put them into small bottles so it’s easier to carry)
  • Mouth Wash, tooth brush, tooth paste, Q-tips
  • Brush, hair ties, hair pins, hair clips
  • Dry shampoo
  • Face water spray
  • lip balm
  • Deodorant
  • Vaseline
  • Penaten for baby rash
  • hand cream, body lotion
  • Purell
  • Relaxing oil

I separated them all in three clear bags:

  1. Liquid/small bottles
  2. Baby essentials
  3. Misc stuff like brush, toothbrush…etc. Basically anything that is not liquid

I would also recommend getting clear plastic bags, so it’s easy for YOUR HUSBAND/Partner to find stuff. I’m saying your partner because let’s face it – they will be the one that’s doing the digging and searching. It would make their life easier if they can see what’s in these little bags. I got these three bags from Walmart for like $19.99

Packing for Baby:

This is so much easier to pack, because it’s not a whole lot your new born will need.

  • 10 baby diapers
  • 3 swaddles blankets
  • 2 receiving blankets
  • 1 blanket
  • 2 oneies
  • 3 sleeping wear
  • 2 hats
  • 2 mittens
  • 1 socks
  • 3 baby towels
  • Car seat should be installed

See, that wasn’t all that bad! But I did took me few hours to put everything together. I used sites like Stuff4Tots to help me really decide what I should pack for the baby. I knew everything that I wanted and needed, I just had to make sure I didn’t forget anything the little one might need. I certainly have baby brain at the moment and I just knew I would forget something really important. I’ve also been thinking about whether or not we should take a stroller with us to the hospital, or if we should just stick with a car seat? As when my friend was in the same situation, she decided to take a stroller; I think it was one that she got from Stroller Buzz and she said she found it easier to get from hospital to car on their way home. It’s worked wonders for her since. I’m yet to decide on what I should do, but I had better decide quickly! As long as I have all the essentials that me and the baby needs, that’s all that matters at the minute. I originally separated them into baby bag and mommy bag, but my friend raised a really good point. My husband would be carrying everything including the baby carriage. So! I decided to switch it up and put in a suitcase, which worked out wonderfully.

So much better and it’s actually more organized!

Lastly, remember to pack photocopies of your IDs and any hospital documents you might need while you are there! Make sure you tell your partner where all the document is too! I put mine all in a folder in the front of the suitcase – there’s no way he can miss that!

Happy packing mamas to be!
